Heed the Warnings of the Butter Battle

This Easter Sunday, as Cold War drums beat softly but surely, we look for sanity and wisdom in the humane literature of Dr. Seuss.

The video, animated by Ralph Bakshi and based upon 1984’s “The Butter Battle Book,” tells the tale of the Yooks and the Zooks, inhabitants of either side of a wall caught in a bitter and increasingly deadly dispute.

All the elements of the darker side of patriotism are there: groupthink, empty and uncritical self-praise, and the demonization of others through the exaggeration of petty differences.
