Former Air Force pilot Brandon Bryant worked in the U.S. Predator program for four and a half years. During that time, he was told, he aided in killing 1,626 people in Afghanistan and other countries through the use of drones.

In the BBC’s video interview with Bryant below, he recalls his first mission, in which he thinks he may have killed a child. Bryant resigned in 2011 when he was given orders to assassinate a U.S. citizen, the Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

This year, the ground feels uncertain — facts are buried and those in power are working to keep them hidden. Now more than ever, independent journalism must go beneath the surface.

At Truthdig, we don’t just report what's happening — we investigate how and why. We follow the threads others leave behind and uncover the forces shaping our future.

Your tax-deductible donation fuels journalism that asks harder questions and digs where others won’t.
