Civil rights attorney Lynne Stewart, who was sentenced to prison for 10 years, has been compassionately released because of terminal breast cancer. She was greeted on her arrival home by a throng.

Stewart was originally sentenced to 28 months. She represented Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and was convicted of providing material support to terrorists by passing messages.

Her defenders, including her husband, Ralph Poynter, worked tirelessly for her release. Listen to an interview with Poynter on Truthdig Radio below, and read about Stewart in Chris Hedges’ column from April 2013.
