Conservatives Celebrate Empty Chair Day, Moore Calls Eastwood ‘Crazy,’ and More

Cantor’s Labor Day Gaffe:

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor apparently does not understand the meaning of Labor Day, a day that’s supposed to be “dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.” Either that, or he’s attempting to completely redefine the holiday as a love letter to management. Cantor tweeted on Monday: “Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success.” (Read more)

Happy Empty Chair Day: The right is rallying around Clint Eastwood’s awkward Republican National Convention speech that included an interview with “Invisible Obama” by dubbing Monday Empty Chair Day. It was kicked off early in the day by conservative bloggers and commentators who are using the day to embrace Eastwood’s much maligned address, not realizing that many are laughing at—and not invisibly with—Clint’s empty chair. Moore Lambastes Eastwood: Liberal filmmaker Michael Moore gave a scathing assessment of Clint Eastwood’s Republican National Convention speech, going so far as to call the Hollywood legend a “crazy old man.” He wrote on The Daily Beast: “Eastwood was able to drive home to tens of millions of viewers the central message of this year’s Republican National Convention: We Are Delusional and Detached From Reality. The Bain of Romney’s Existence: The list of speakers scheduled for the Democratic National Convention this week includes employees of Bain Capital-controlled companies. Among the topics they will discuss: the business practices of private equity firms. The Republican presidential nominee has embraced his record at Bain, which has been called into question and criticized by the Obama campaign and Democrats. (Read more)

No GOP Convention Bounce: Mitt Romney did not get the expected boost that a presidential candidate typically gets after the party’s convention. What’s more, Romney’s speech was considered rather unimpressive, according to post-convention polls.
