Hillary Clinton apparently would rather not deal with Sarah Palin, but she was nearly ambushed by the Alaska governor at a New York rally. Organizers didn’t tell Clinton they’d invited another special guest, and the New York senator backed out when she heard the news. True to form, Palin and friends responded with ready-made indignation.

Last weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” sketch is looking more and more prescient.

Hillary Clinton has carefully avoided directly criticizing Sarah Palin, but the same courtesy apparently doesn’t work the other way.

Palin’s spokeswoman this morning issued a statement hitting Clinton for pulling out of a protest being organized by several Jewish groups outside the United Nations on Sept. 22 against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Clinton cancelled after finding out that Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, also planned to be there.

“Governor Palin believes that the danger of a nuclear Iran is greater than party or politics. She hopes that all parties can rally together in opposition to this grave threat,” said Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for Palin.
