It certainly is difficult to uphold a vow of celibacy when confronted by the contradictory evidence embodied in two teenage children, and this is the reason why a Los Angeles-area bishop, Gabino Zavala, recently resigned from his vaunted position within the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI has accepted Zavala’s resignation, according to the Vatican. –KA

The Archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose Gomez, wrote in a letter to worshippers that Bishop Zavala told him in December that he was the father of two teenage children.

The children, who are minors, live with their mother in another state.
