Three weeks to the day before a gunman opened fire at L.A.’s airport, killing a TSA agent and wounding others, Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed bills that would have put new restrictions on the kind of weapon used in the shooting.

At the time, Brown said, “The state of California already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, including bans on military-style assault rifles and high capacity ammunition magazines.” He argued that some of the measures would restrict the lawful rights of hunters. Brown did sign into law 11 gun control measures in what Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, R-Twin Peaks, called “the single greatest assault on the 2nd Amendment in California history.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Brown vetoed a bill that would have required owners of assault rifles with detachable magazines to register those weapons.

Reports say the suspected shooter used an AR-15 assault rifle.
