Take a peek behind the scenes of “Rising Up with Sonali,” the daily radio and television show hosted by Truthdig columnist Sonali Kolhatkar and broadcast online and on KPFK.
With a focus on issues of race, gender and class, the show is a spiritual ally of popular progressive news and opinion shows like “Democracy Now!” and “The Young Turks.” “Rising Up,” however, enjoys the distinction of being produced entirely by two immigrant women: Kolhatkar, who books guests, writes and hosts, and Anna Buss, who serves as technical director, sound engineer, visual editor and web and social media coordinator. “Two women doing the work of about 10,” Kolhatkar says.
Based in Los Angeles, Kolhatkar’s columns appear weekly at Truthdig. She recently wrote about the former Greek finance minister-turned-European-activist-intellectual Yanis Varoufakis, 15-year-old indigenous environmental activist Xiuhtezcatl Tonatiuh and the “Nuit Debout” labor protests in Paris.
