GOP Senate Candidate Compares Smoking Ban to Hitler Policy

West Virginia Republican Wants 1,000 Sky Lasers

Aspiring senator John Raese has said some strange things, but it’s hard to top “We need 1,000 laser systems put in the sky and we need it right now. That is [of] paramount importance.” Raese is so worried about nuclear attack, you see, he would like to deploy “right now” a technology that probably won’t be workable for at least 20 years.

Young Democrat Nabs Byrd’s Senate Seat ... for Now

West Virginia’s Gov. Joe Manchin III has picked a successor to the late U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, and the new recruit is a young whippersnapper at that. He’s 36-year-old Carte Goodwin, and he’s also a Democrat, but his party can’t get too excited ... (continued)

Massey Disaster Not Just Tragic, but Criminal

Massey Energy runs the Upper Big Branch mine in Montcoal, W.Va., where 29 miners were killed last week. The loss of life is tragic, but the UBB explosion is more than tragic; it is criminal.

Will We Forget the Miners Again?

There is a dispiriting and, yes, heartbreaking sameness about how we respond to mining disasters.

Is Byrd’s Health a Factor for Health Reform?

Not to be morbid or insensitive, but the succession of Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat got us thinking about another Democrat among the 60 probably needed to push through health care reform.

‘Daily Show’: Punditry and Douchery

Hey, Chris Matthews, what’s the French word for shower? Jon Stewart takes stock of the media coverage from last week’s West Virginia Democratic primary, wherein it was established that Barack Obama may not be the Mountain State’s “kind of guy,” and pits Matthews against Clinton campaign chair Terry McAuliffe in a good ol’ fashioned “Douche Off.”

Choosy West Virginians Choose Clinton

What’s that? The Democratic primary race is over? Not if West Virginians can help it. Almost immediately after polls closed, the West Virginia primary was called for Hillary Clinton. But will she win by a big enough margin to turn heads? Update: Clinton won by a whopping 41 points.

Obama Ignores West Virginia

Voters in West Virginia are widely expected to hand Hillary Clinton a huge, if moot, victory on Tuesday. Barack Obama will deal with the predicted hiccup by avoiding it altogether. The presumptive Democratic nominee will not be in the state and he will not give a speech, hoping that superdelegates either don’t notice or don’t care.

Clinton Supporters Press On in W.Va.

Despite the doomsday tones that some in the blogosphere and in more traditional media circles took in their assessment of Hillary Clinton’s chances of nabbing the Democratic nomination after last Tuesday’s primaries, supporters have flocked to West Virginia. They are working hard there to keep their favorite candidate in the running, even if it means dealing with heckling from some locals who don’t share their mission.
