While it may be frowned upon to discuss the weather, in this age of global warming it’s worth noting that the current heat wave is expected to break records throughout the western United States. Boise, Idaho, for instance, is about to be 6 degrees hotter than ever, while the town of Baker, Calif., which conveniently possesses a 134-foot-tall thermometer, recently topped off at 125 degrees. Can the ice caps be far behind?

More than 200 people have died in Karachi, Pakistan, as a result of storms that ravaged the city. Heavy rain, gale-force winds and flooding obliterated many homes, while falling trees, billboards and power lines wreaked further havoc. At least 45 people have also died in southern India.

It may sound like science fiction, but researchers are working on a number of bizarre emergency plans to fight global warming, including a mock volcano that spews reflective dust and a solar shade made up of a trillion flying saucers. Scientists have been hesitant to discuss such “geoengineering” schemes, but they may be our only hope if humans fail to curb emissions or the crisis turns out to be worse than predicted.

Much of the capital of Indonesia is under 10 feet of muddy water after days of torrential rain caused devastating floods. Hundreds of thousands of people already have been displaced, and experts warn that the situation may worsen, with another week of heavy rain on the way.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in California after nearly three-quarters of the state’s citrus crop was wiped out by subfreezing weather last week, causing up to $1 billion in losses. Prices around the country are expected to rise drastically, as California is the nation’s major producer of fresh citrus fruit.

From the AP: “The Bush administration has blocked release of a report that suggests global warming is contributing to the frequency and strength of hurricanes, the journal Nature reported Tuesday.”
As ThinkProgress points out, this is the third time in less than a week we’ve heard such accusations.
