In the months after the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act under the argument that it is no longer necessary, regressive voting laws are taking root that threaten to snap the country back to the 1950s, disenfranchising minorities and women.

Two States Start ‘Separate but Equal’ Voting Systems

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s gutting of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and a separate ruling tossing out Arizona’s “proof of citizenship” law, Arizona and Kansas have adopted separate voter registration systems for federal and state/local elections, the latter requiring proof of citizenship. Look at it as Jim Crow 2.0.

Trayvon, George and the Perfect Crime: Reflections on the Zimmerman Trial

How did George Zimmerman and his lawyers secure a not-guilty verdict on both second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the killing of Trayvon Martin? Although it’s tempting to answer that racism alone explains the trial’s outcome, digging a little deeper reveals an even more disturbing three-dimensional picture.

The Third Political Branch

We prefer to think of the Supreme Court as an institution apart from politics and above its struggles.
