A coroner has ruled the fatal shooting of an already wounded British journalist by U.S. troops to be an “unlawful act.”  Though it refused to take part in the inquest, the Pentagon defended the shooting: “We have always gone to extreme measures to avoid civilian casualties and collateral damage.”

N. Korea Reports Nuclear Test

North Korea claimed it successfully tested a nuclear weapon last night, fulfilling a promise made last week.  Pyongyang had planned the underground test in response to what it called “U.S. hostility.”

    Tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela took a bizarre turn this week after Venezuelan authorities confiscated diplomatic cargo headed for the American Embassy in Caracas and accused Washington of smuggling.  Included in the shipment were parts for ejector seats and 176 pounds of chicken.

    Pakistan Called ?Hub? of Airline Terror Plot

    U.S. and European officials have traced major support for the recently foiled aircraft terror plot to Pakistan, though they praised the Pakistani government for its ?vital? role in unraveling the scheme.  Investigators said the operation drew financial and logistical support from Karachi and Lahore, and at least 17 of those in British custody are said to have ties to Pakistan.

    Italians Seek Indictment of American Soldier

    Italian prosecutors want U.S. Marine Mario Lozano to stand trial for the death of Nicola Calipari, a 51-year-old Italian intelligence agent who was killed at a U.S. roadblock in Iraq. Calipari was escorting an Italian journalist who had been released by kidnappers. A report published by Italy last year conflicts with the U.S. version of events and, according to the BBC, cited “the troops’ stress and inexperience.”
