Georgia Immigration Bill Looks to Arizona

All aboard the hate train. Georgia’s Legislature has passed a bill that copies some of the most maligned parts of Arizona’s infamously anti-immigrant SB 1070. The Georgia bill is now on the desk of Gov. Nathan Deal.

Utah Agency at Heart of Undocumented List Leak

A list of 1,300 alleged illegal immigrants has been given to Utah media and state policymakers—a list that includes individuals’ first and last names, Social Security numbers, addresses, and even pregnancy due dates—and many are looking to a particular state agency as the culprit for the leak.

Ariz. Anti-Immigrant Wing to Target Children

Arizona Republicans are expected to introduce legislation this fall that would strip the citizenship of those quite offensively dubbed “anchor babies,” children born in the U.S. to parents who are undocumented. It seems that the state’s anti-immigrant wing is going even crazier than previously thought possible.

New, Softer Approach to Illegal Workers

The immigration raids of the Bush years that have carried over into the Obama administration may be changing. The era of federal agents busting into shops and rounding up undocumented workers for deportation is being replaced by a new effort to use fines and civil sanctions, making employers responsible, rather than the workers themselves.

ICE raids—federal officials who bust into rural factory towns to arrest suspected “illegal immigrants”—continued this week in Laurel, Miss. The town of about 18,000 saw federal officials revise the number of people arrested in the raid to 595. It remained unknown whether the majority of detainees would serve jail time or be immediately deported.

An Embarrassed Romney Fires His Gardeners

Before Mitt Romney takes such a hard line against undocumented workers, he might try to find an American citizen willing to cut the grass at his suburban Boston home. For the second time in a year, the candidate has been caught employing undocumented immigrants by way of a landscaping company, which he has now fired.

O’Reilly on America’s ‘Complexion’ Change

In this latest dispatch from the “No Spin Zone,” Bill O’Reilly frets with Sen. John McCain about the “legitimate fear” that undocumented workers and their “extended families” will infiltrate the U.S., setting off a domino effect that will “sink the Republican Party” and—“pardon the pun”—alter America’s “complexion” permanently.

Immigrants Protest Bush Proposal

Immigrant rights groups are voicing their opposition to the president’s new migrant worker plan, which would allow undocumented workers to buy $3,500 permits every three years to remain in the country. Democrats and the Catholic Church have also criticized the proposed policy, which is harsher and costlier than a previous proposal supported by Bush.

Senate Passes Landmark Immigration Reform Bill

The legislation would mark the most significant changes in immigration law in two decades. The bill contains a guest-worker program and offers undocumented workers a path to legal residence and even citizenship (after paying fines). It is far more immigrant-friendly than the House version. Now comes the fight over reconciling the two bills.
