Chile Earthquake Kills More Than 140

An earthquake in central Chile has killed more than 140, authorities say, and triggered both a tsunami and a declaration of a “state of catastrophe.” Chilean President Michelle Bachelet warned that there would probably be more deaths and more aftershocks.

U.S. Donations to Burma, China Tighten Up

Americans apparently have a track record of opening their wallets to assist those in need after natural disasters at home and abroad. That was the case, at least, after the 2004 tsunami in Asia and Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. in 2005. Landslides Hit Indonesia on Anniversary of Tsunami

A combination of rainfall and rising tides, as well as the possible effects of deforestation, sparked landslides that buried homes and killed at least 80 people in central Indonesia on Wednesday.  Thousands were forced to evacuate the Java region, and officials say the death toll may still rise.
