Paul Craig Roberts was an assistant secretary of the Treasury under Ronald Reagan. Like many Americans, he has been wounded by the government he helped create, and he’s tired of being called offensive and depressing for talking about it.

“This American Life” host Ira Glass gave monologist Mike Daisey every opportunity to explain the lies in his “The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” performance, which became the basis for one of the radio show’s most popular and talked about episodes. Daisey’s rationalization for lying turns out to be, like much of his show, bullshit.

By Mr. Fish — In his satirical lexicon on human nature, “The Devil’s Dictionary,” Ambrose Bierce defined truth as “an ingenious compound of desirability and appearance.” In deference to the profound wisdom offered by that definition, it’s not hard to see why I’ve spent my whole life being fleeced by bullshit and blindsided by a reality indifferent to truth.

Jon Stewart recently went on Fox News and said, “Who are the most consistently misinformed media viewers? ... Fox viewers, consistently, every poll.” The St. Petersburg Times evaluated the claim and deemed it “false,” but its investigation reveals a lot more about the sorry state of news and the problems with trying to identify informed Americans. Glenn Beck took time off from televised crying last Friday to explain himself to Jay Leno. "I'm a regular guy. I'm a self-educated man," said Beck, who bragged about his 10 weeks of college. Shortly before announcing "I'm not a TV guy," Beck declared that "we have a truth problem" in America. No shit.

Congress gave final approval to a bill that gives the federal government far-reaching power to try to decrease smoking in the U.S. Positioned to be much more effective than those stupid tobacco company-sponsored “Truth” commercials, the bill would limit nicotine levels and use of words like mild and light. Humans may be susceptible to methods of persuasion that play on the emotions and circumvent logic, but computers are another story. Enter a software program that purports to detect “spin” in politicians’ speeches by using a complex (albeit man-made) algorithm to hunt for truth-stretching words and phrases.

President Bush’s former aide Karl Rove knows a thing or two about crafting campaign messages and, although he does not spare Barack Obama’s campaign, he now says that John McCain’s team has gone beyond the “100 percent truth test” in its recent crop of ads targeting the Illinois senator.

By E.J. Dionne, Jr. — Lately, the campaigns of both Democratic contenders have changed—and those changes have made both stronger. Now there’s a contest between the old Obama and the new Clinton. Updated.

Hillary Clinton was so irked by a couple of Barack Obama campaign mailers that a few days ago she publicly scolded him and said “every Democrat should be outraged.” Clinton herself has been accused of sending misleading mailers to voters, including one that went out shortly after her now infamous “shame on you” news conference. For inundated Ohioans, it’s a question of whom to trust. Updated.

An anti-Al Gore / global warming video recently appeared on YouTube. It posed as an amateur work, but was in fact created by a slick Republican public relations firm that shills for Exxon.

Al Gore, in an interview with The Nation, says that no meaningful change will happen on the global warming front until the public starts demanding it of their leaders. And right now, the people have other things on their minds.
|
|
By Joe Conason — “Like many prophets, Gore has often been derided as an annoyance, an extremist and possibly a madman. Every great American mind of our time felt compelled to take a shot at him.”

“We need to set aside” the issue of what is causing global warming, the president said, in defense of his decision not to watch Al Gore’s movie. To which Gore later thundered back, “Why should we set aside the global scientific consensus? Is it because Exxon Mobil wants us to set it aside?”
Not that this is a surprise, but what a tragedy nonetheless that the man who could most effect meaningful change on the issue of global warming won’t even watch an acclaimed movie on the issue.
