Why Girls Mature Faster Than Boys

Researchers have found brain connectivity occurs earlier in females, which may account for a difference in maturity between the genders; Frank Capra’s classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” was considered communist propaganda; meanwhile, it’s time to heed President Truman’s warning and limit the CIA. Human Rights Watch Says Obama Will Go Down in History—and Not in a Good Way

President Obama’s decision to not veto the defense authorization bill, which “would codify indefinite detention without trial into U.S. law for the first time since the McCarthy era,” is a “historic tragedy,” Human Rights Watch said Wednesday.

Michael Moore to Obama: ‘Say It Isn’t So’

On the eve of President Obama’s speech at West Point, one of his more media-savvy supporters, filmmaker Michael Moore, sent out a pre-emptive missive to the would-be “new war president,” predicting the fallout that Obama will face if he follows through with his reported plan to send 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan.

Jon Stewart Inflicts Discomfort on Cliff May

Cliff May, president of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, was clearly on the defensive as he took the hot seat during Tuesday’s “Daily Show” with the unenviable task of debating whether or not waterboarding is torture, whether American officials have to follow the Geneva Conventions under all circumstances, and whether President Truman was a war criminal.

Nothing to Fear but No Health Care

Fifty million Americans are without health insurance, and 25 million are “underinsured.” Millions being laid off will soon be added to those rolls. At this perilous moment, we need sweeping New Deal-caliber changes, not the impotent tinkering that has been proposed.

Hoover’s Secret Plan to Jail ‘Dangerous’ Americans

According to recently declassified documents, infamous FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover presented President Harry Truman with a plan to suspend habeas corpus and imprison some 12,000 people, mostly Americans, of whom he disapproved. The year was 1950 and the occasion was the start of the Korean War, but Hoover had apparently been building his list of the “potentially dangerous” for years.

Hillary Clinton:  ‘Bush Lite’?

Judging by the senator’s voting record and her position on matters of international law and human rights, political scholar Stephen Zunes believes Hillary Clinton is poised to carry on the legacy of a certain prior occupant of the White House if she’s elected next November—and it’s not the one you might think.

The Terror America Wrought

During a week of mayhem in Iraq, in which terrorists have rightly been condemned for targeting schoolchildren, it is sobering to recall that this week is also the 62nd anniversary of a U.S. attack that deliberately took the lives of thousands of children on their way to school in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
