The Department of Homeland Security has finally caved in to widespread public disdain for its color-coded terror alert system and will replace it with a new, simpler system next week.

No More Orange Alerts

Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano is expected to announce the retirement of George W. Bush’s color-coded terror alert system that always seemed like an easy way to terrify the public. In its day, the color-coded threat indicator only hit red (severe) once, and never dropped below yellow (elevated).

Terror Alerts Stuck on Yellow

The current national threat level is yellow, which, according to the Department of Homeland Security, means a “significant risk of terrorist attacks.” But it turns out the national threat level is almost always at yellow, defeating the whole purpose of a warning system that operates on a scale.

Ridge: Bushies Manipulated Terror Threat System

One sinister li’l tidbit from former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge’s upcoming tell-all won’t do much to change the Bush administration’s reputation for string-pulling on as many governmental fronts as possible: According to teasers released by his publisher, Ridge was pushed by Bush & Co. to raise the terrorist threat level on the eve of W.’s second electoral victory in 2004.
