Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin has renounced his American citizenship in a bid to avoid up to $67 million in taxes on the billions he’s expected to make when the company goes public. Democratic U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Bob Casey have introduced a bill to punish such ex-citizens with heavy taxes and bar them from ever re-entering the U.S.

You work hard. You pay taxes. But 26 corporations don’t—or at least they didn’t between 2008 and 2011. General Electric, Boeing and Verizon were among the major companies that together enjoyed more than $78 billion in tax subsidies over the last four years, according to a report by Citizens for Tax Justice.

According to his wife, who was granted a visit with the dissident artist for the first time in the six weeks since he was detained at an airport and accused of tax evasion, Chinese authorities seem to be looking after the physical welfare of Ai Weiwei. A Swiss judge fined the former banker who gave confidential files to WikiLeaks roughly $6,250, but spared the whistle-blower a prison sentence. Rudolf Elmer was found guilty of violating Switzerland’s confidential banking laws, which have protected such people as tax-dodging Americans and the Nazis.

Swiss bank accounts aren’t what they used to be. Switzerland recently agreed to fork over information on 4,450 UBS AG bank accounts to the IRS as an investigation into suspected tax evasion threatens the good name that Swiss banking has provided to money launderers and tax evaders for centuries.
