Torture Bill Nears Bush’s Desk

A provision that would grant President Bush the discretion of deciding what is and isn’t torture is likely to land on his desk by the weekend unless there’s a legislative miracle.
We can only hope that the Supreme Court will toss out this travesty.

Tony Blair: Shut Down Guantanamo Prison

The British prime minister becomes the latest to urge the closure of the infamous detention center in Cuba. Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan and Sen. Joe Biden, among others, have all made similar pleas, which the White House has brushed off.

Spying Program Yields Few Suspects

Investigators eavesdropping on Americans in overseas calls have dismissed nearly all of them as suspects, according to the Washington Post. This is huge, because “a search cannot be judged ‘reasonable’ if it is based on evidence that experience shows to be unreliable.”
Meanwhile, feisty Russ Feingold, a Democratic senator, takes the attorney general to the cleaners for lying to him a year ago about Bush’s surveillance activities. Gonzales shoots back, “I was telling the truth then. I’m telling the truth now.” | story
