So far the Democratic primary race has been something of a competition over who most disapproves of our unpopular president, so it was a surprise when Barack Obama on Wednesday let this fly: “Part of the problem here is not just George Bush and the White House.” (Gasp!) He went on to promise a more open government under his care, arguing that our democracy is not democratic enough.
The Freedom of Information Act was signed into law by Lyndon Johnson in 1966, and has proved to be an indispensable tool for our democracy, but negotiating the bureaucracy can be intimidating. A bipartisan Senate bill that would have created a public database of all government contracts has been blocked by an unknown senator. The bill, which passed its committee unanimously, can now move forward only if the mysterious senator who placed it on “secret hold” removes the constraint. (h/t: Crooks and Liars)
