Aspiring senator John Raese has said some strange things, but it’s hard to top “We need 1,000 laser systems put in the sky and we need it right now. That is [of] paramount importance.” Raese is so worried about nuclear attack, you see, he would like to deploy “right now” a technology that probably won’t be workable for at least 20 years.

In news that would make Han Solo proud, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency has shot down a ballistic missile using a high-powered laser. The technology, which never, ever worked in the past, is criticized by some as weaponizing space and others as a colossal waste of resources.

Well, this looks about right. Although it doesn’t exactly represent the sort of image overhaul we’d recommend for Wall Street types given the past 15 months or so, this footage of Darth Vader and a supporting cast of stormtroopers ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday has a certain refreshing frankness about it, no?

It is a period of political civil war. Hillary Clinton, striking from her hidden base in Pennsylvania, has scored a major victory against Barack Obama. During the battle, rogue surrogates provided distractions from real issues. Pursued by the Republican Party’s sinister agents ... well, you get the idea.

In a satirical match made in heaven, Stephen Colbert appears in cartoon form on “The Simpsons” season premiere. Meanwhile, “Family Guy” takes a jab at the Bushies (and Limbaughs) of the world on its own season debut—featuring a “Star Wars” send-up, just to add that much more comical catnip to the mix for the show’s loyal target demographic.

Not to pile on, but there’s something about Dick Cheney’s gruff personality that invites awkward and amusing moments. If you don’t want to be compared to the emperor from “Star Wars,” it’s probably best not to act like such a menacing puppet master.

The House just voted down an amendment that would have provided $1.25 billion for port inspections and disaster preparedness. Meanwhile, as Think Progress points out, the Bush budget contains an increase of $1.7 billion for a Star Wars-esque missile defense program—which doesn’t even work.
