Sadly, we are sorry to report that, given the opportunity, even Yoda himself isn’t above wolf-whistling.

Teenagers in Space

In the 1970s, those in a position to produce movies, TV shows, comics, novels, or memoirs about Vietnam were convinced that Americans felt badly enough without such reminders. It was simpler to consider the war film and war toy casualties of Vietnam than to create cultural products with the wrong heroes, victims, and villains.

The Mouse House Buys ‘Star Wars’ for $4 Billion

The Walt Disney Co. used to be the most creative business in the world. Now it’s a conglomerate that buys other people’s inventions: Pixar, Marvel and, most recently, Lucasfilm, home of the original blockbuster.

Magic Carpet Ride

Taking a page right out of “Star Wars,” California-based aerospace manufacturer Aerofex has released video showing a kind of “hover bike” maneuvering through the desert in scenes that resemble Luke Skywalker’s dashes through the Tatooine wilderness on his X-34 Landspeeder.

Mr. Fish

In Defense of Naked Women

I used to be 11. Occasionally, I am 11 again. I’m OK with that. I have a theory that by the time people reach 13 they’ve experienced every age they will ever experience in their lifetimes; 14 does not exist.

Can Obama Be Luke Skywalker?

Welcome to the war over E2I2. The great budget battle of Bill Clinton’s presidency was waged around a slightly different set of initials, also inspired by the “Star Wars” character R2D2.

West Virginia Republican Wants 1,000 Sky Lasers

Aspiring senator John Raese has said some strange things, but it’s hard to top “We need 1,000 laser systems put in the sky and we need it right now. That is [of] paramount importance.” Raese is so worried about nuclear attack, you see, he would like to deploy “right now” a technology that probably won’t be workable for at least 20 years.

U.S. Missile Defense Agency

‘Star Wars’ Technology Sees First Hit

In news that would make Han Solo proud, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency has shot down a ballistic missile using a high-powered laser. The technology, which never, ever worked in the past, is criticized by some as weaponizing space and others as a colossal waste of resources.

Wall Street Officially Joins the Dark Side

Well, this looks about right. Although it doesn’t exactly represent the sort of image overhaul we’d recommend for Wall Street types given the past 15 months or so, this footage of Darth Vader and a supporting cast of stormtroopers ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday has a certain refreshing frankness about it, no?

The Empire Strikes Barack

It is a period of political civil war. Hillary Clinton, striking from her hidden base in Pennsylvania, has scored a major victory against Barack Obama. During the battle, rogue surrogates provided distractions from real issues. Pursued by the Republican Party’s sinister agents ... well, you get the idea.

Colbert Does a Turn on ‘Simpsons’

In a satirical match made in heaven, Stephen Colbert appears in cartoon form on “The Simpsons” season premiere.  Meanwhile, “Family Guy” takes a jab at the Bushies (and Limbaughs) of the world on its own season debut—featuring a “Star Wars” send-up, just to add that much more comical catnip to the mix for the show’s loyal target demographic.

Cheney Hides in the Bushes

Not to pile on, but there’s something about Dick Cheney’s gruff personality that invites awkward and amusing moments. If you don’t want to be compared to the emperor from “Star Wars,” it’s probably best not to act like such a menacing puppet master.

Blair Seeks U.S. Missile Site in Britain

For months, Tony Blair has been secretly lobbying the U.S. to locate a missile defense site in Britain. Poland and the Czech Republic are also in the running. The $90-billion “son of star wars” program has performed poorly in the past, and is still under development as it’s deployed.

Defense Dept. Removes Critical Report from Website

The report, by the DoD’s inspector general, found security flaws in the “Star Wars” missile defense system. After a magazine did a story on the report, the DoD scrubbed the document from its website, and won’t say why it did so. Luckily for us curious types, the magazine saved a digital copy. House Votes ‘No’ on Ports—‘Yes’ Is Likely on Star Wars

The House just voted down an amendment that would have provided $1.25 billion for port inspections and disaster preparedness. Meanwhile, as Think Progress points out, the Bush budget contains an increase of $1.7 billion for a Star Wars-esque missile defense program—which doesn’t even work.
May the Force be with us.
