Have Your Hummer and Hug It Too

Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to make the environmental movement sexy. Why get rid of Hummers, California’s governor argued Wednesday, when you can make them run on biofuel and hydrogen, like his? Schwarzenegger has a warning for politicians who stand in the way of environmental progress: “Your political base will melt away as surely as the polar ice caps. ... ”

Limbaugh Picks a Fight with Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger has had enough of Rush Limbaugh, who refers to the California governor as a “closet liberal.” On Tuesday’s “Today Show,” Arnold fired back, saying “Limbaugh is irrelevant.” That was apparently too much for Rush, who responded on own show by saying Arnold has clearly “sold out.”

State of Emergency for California Crops

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in California after nearly three-quarters of the state’s citrus crop was wiped out by subfreezing weather last week, causing up to $1 billion in losses. Prices around the country are expected to rise drastically, as California is the nation’s major producer of fresh citrus fruit.

Arnold Outlaws Handhelds-While-Driving

With the governor’s signature, California becomes the fourth state to ban drivers from holding cellphones while driving. The law goes into effect in July 2008, and motorists will still be allowed to use hands-free phone technology.

  • Cool tidbit: Schwarzenegger said he sometimes follows his 16-year-old daughter to make sure she’s not driving while holding a phone.

Schwarzenegger Muses About ‘Hot’-Blooded Latina Lawmaker

A tape (not yet available) has surfaced in which Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger talks about the “hot” and racially mixed blood of a legislator. But there’s no hay to be made here: The legislator says she embraces the label.

  • Above: screenshot from a promotional video that Schwarzenegger made about Rio’s Carnival in which he expressed an early interest in mixed-race women.

Schwarzenegger Defies GOP on Emissions Cap

California will become the first state to cap greenhouse gas emissions, should a deal reached between Gov. Schwarzenegger and state Democrats pass the Legislature.  The deal is seen as a betrayal by Republicans, who oppose a state cap on emissions.

Schwarzenegger Running Away With Race, Say Polls

“The Governator” has opened up a big lead over opponent Phil Angelides in the November California governor’s race. It’s quite a comeback considering how badly voters spanked Arnold by voting down his four ballot proposals last year. (Kos has the details).

    California Legislators Challenge Hemp Ban

California legislators have sent a bill to Gov. Schwarzenegger that would legalize the cultivation of industrial hemp, setting up a direct confrontation with federal drug authorities.  The plant, which contains none of the hallucinogenic properties of marijuana, is considered a kind of miracle crop by farmers and entrepreneurs who seek to exploit its fast growth and myriad uses.

    Schwarzenegger Reaffirms Support for Minutemen

The Calif. governor said about the group of private citizens who are patrolling the country’s border with Mexico, “I support any time that a civilian wants to go and do the job that law enforcement cannot do.” (Story—scroll down)

  • Ironically, the governor made the statement at a campaign stop while trying to burnish his credentials with Latino voters—many of whom view Minutemen as akin to the KKK.

  • Also, higher up in the piece: Karl Rove gets booed while trying to woo Latinos at a conference.
