One of President Bush’s closest advisers will celebrate this Independence Day by liberating himself from the White House inner circle. Dan Bartlett, who has served as Bush’s aide since his early political beginnings in Texas, announced on Friday (his 36th birthday) that he will be stepping down around July 4 to seek a new career.

In this “Family Guy” homage to “Back to the Future,” a trip back in time triggers an alternate reality where Al Gore is president, crime has disappeared, cars can fly and Halliburton Chairman Dick Cheney has shot Justice Scalia, Karl Rove and Tucker Carlson in a tragic hunting accident.

By Marie Cocco — It is time to stop referring to the “fired U.S attorneys scandal” by that misnomer, and call it what it is: a White House-coordinated effort to use the vast powers of the Justice Department to swing elections to Republicans.

By Bill Boyarsky — Attorney General Alberto Gonzales (above, right) is feeling the heat to come up with some answers to dozens of questions he evaded on April 19 as he appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to explain his role in the firings of eight federal attorneys. Bill Boyarsky has an idea what Gonzales doesn’t want the committee—or the nation—to find out.

This viral cartoon imagines the political landscape as an epic battle between comic-book super heroes and villains, featuring George Bush as “Petro-Man,” Karl Rove as “Doctor Spin,” John Edwards as “the Arbitrator” and more.

Jon Stewart covers the shenanigans of the Bush administration as some of its key members attempt to (mis)lead the press as it follows the crumb trail in search of those pesky missing e-mails.

Keith Olbermann interviews a computer forensics expert, who explains various ways the White House might uncover those pesky missing e-mails. All in all, the chances that up to 5 million e-mails have completely disappeared are very slim.

The recent spate of racially charged ads against Rep. Harold Ford Jr. have been linked to a Rove acolyte and veteran hitman with a history of dirty campaigning.

During a tense interview with NPR, Karl Rove defended his claim that the GOP will hold on to both houses of Congress and accused host Robert Siegel of bias. (h/t: Crooks and Liars)

That’s one of the claims in a new tell-all book by a Christian conservative former Bush administration insider.

The Huffington Post has a nice roundup of Bill Clinton gems gleaned from a massive New Yorker piece by David Remnick. After spending some quality time with the former president, Remnick was able to extract some surprisingly frank comments, including: ?I am sick of Karl Rove’s bulls—t.?

Bob Perry, a Karl Rove-connected backer of the Swift Boat attacks on John Kerry, has pumped $5 million into a new group targeting Democratic candidates. We’re sure he’ll play fair this time. (h/t: Huff Po)

By Joe Conason — The revelation that Richard Armitage first disclosed Valerie Wilson’s identity as a covert CIA operative doesn’t change the fact that it was Karl Rove and Scooter Libby who used that information in an attempt to punish Ms. Wilson for her husband’s criticism of the Bush administration.

According to rawstory.com, a forthcoming book alleges that Bush, while still governor, made anti-Semitic remarks to a reporter: ?You know what I’m gonna tell those Jews when I get to Israel, don’t you, Herman? I’m telling ‘em they’re all going to hell.” (h/t: Americablog)

By Molly Ivins — Those who advocate withdrawal from Iraq ASAP have just as much of a duty to make the arguments for doing so—and to admit how much they don’t know—as those who got us into this mess five years ago.

The ABC News host reports: “According to a close Lieberman adviser, the President’s political guru, Karl Rove, has reached out to the Lieberman camp with a message straight from the Oval Office: ‘The boss wants to help. Whatever we can do, we will do.’ ”
Quelle surprise….
Also, top Senate Dems Schumer, Reid and Dodd throw their support to Lamont (but stop short of calling on Lieberman to drop his independent bid).

Aides to Sen. Joe Lieberman accused Ned Lamont’s campaign Tuesday morning—with no evidence—of attacking and bringing down Lieberman’s website. But Markos (of Daily Kos) seems to have found the real culprit: Lieberman’s $15-a-month web hosting company went down, along with all its clients. (Thanks to reader “publius” for the link.)
Check out Lieberman’s unfounded accusations
What an oddly petty conclusion to a race that has hinged on the most consequential of all topics.

Columnist Robert Novak revealed for the first time, in a column to be released Wednesday, that both Karl Rove and former CIA spokesman Bill Harlow had confirmed Valerie Plame’s status as a CIA agent. He said that this occurred only after another administration official first supplied him with the info.
This is not a huge deal, relatively speaking, but certainly of interest to Plamegate junkies….

That’s the word from special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and Rove’s lawyer. This comes after months of behind-the-scenes negotiations between the two sides. Bush called Fitzgerald’s conduct throughout the proceeding “dignified.”

Jon Stewart lays it out in technicolor: Bush had no solid backing for his claim that Iran is providing the deadly Iraqi roadside bombs. (As Truthdig also pointed out two days ago.)
