Facing a House ethics investigation into allegations that he had a non-consensual sexual encounter with a teenage girl, U.S. Rep. David Wu, an Oregon Democrat, announced his resignation Tuesday and said he would leave office once the debt ceiling impasse had ended. Wu, a Congress member since 1999, was the first Chinese-American to serve in the House.

Not to kick a man when he’s down, but there’s something to be said for a resignation speech that at least mentions why the person is resigning, even if it’s the pitifully transparent “to spend more time with my family.” After Gonzales concluded his farewell remarks, at least one reporter shouted, “Why are you leaving?”

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi officially resigned today after weeks of refusing to concede defeat in April 9-10 elections. Berlusconi, the largest media owner in Italy, has had a stranglehold on the country’s media, but even an all-out television blitz could not convince the public to ignore a failing economy, which the new center-left government must now revive.
