By Mr. Fish — Political comedy, without practical application within a political strategy, will merely satiate our hunger for real change with a punch line and rob us of our sensitivity to any number of social and political injustices.

By Ruth Marcus — It has not been clear whether, or how, the tea party would seek to accommodate the religious aspect of the conservative movement. Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally illustrated one potential route.

By Arthur Blaustein — I have a dream that the Yalie son of a Houston oil magnate can walk hand in hand with the daughter of a Wall Street hedge fund operator on the white sands of Southampton while evading inheritance taxes.

Our morbid curiosity got the better of us and we went looking for video documentation of Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor Rally.” Hop past the jump for Sarah Palin speechifying, Beck describing himself as savior of America (sigh) and the inevitable music video.

Glenn Beck is holding a rally at the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s dream speech. Our friends at Brave New Films send this video lowlight reel to remind us why Beck shouldn’t dare stand anywhere near King’s legacy.

Two rival rallies did a lot of shouting at each other in New York on Sunday, but otherwise kept things civil. Hey, this is America, where everyone has the right to express themselves, eat canned cheese and *gasp* worship as they please. Even Scientologists.

By Chris Hedges — Few voices in American politics have been as consistent, as reasoned and as moral as his, which is one reason why Mike Gravel, on a chilly December morning, is in front of the White House, not inside it.

John McCain’s supporters are plenty scared that a secret terrorist-loving Muslim could take over the White House. Meanwhile, Barack Obama’s supporters think there’s nothing scarier than Sarah Palin. At last, fear has brought both sides together.

Barack Obama drew the largest crowd of his presidential campaign, 100,000 people, on Saturday at a rally in St. Louis. The Illinois senator had been behind in the race in Missouri until very recently.

Here’s what one McCain-Palin supporter had to say about Barack Obama: “I don’t like the fact that he thinks us white people are trash, because we’re not.” No, the people who think that may not be trash, but they are full of nonsense, as are those in this clip who declare that Obama is a terrorist.

Keith Olbermann took time on “Countdown” Tuesday night for a “Special Comment” about the outbreak of hostility toward Barack Obama at recent McCain-Palin rallies, holding John McCain directly responsible for stirring up the crowds. “These people are speaking for you,” Olbermann insisted.

Looks like John McCain is attempting to put a lid on the hostility directed at his rival, Barack Obama, during McCain-Palin rallies, but some of the Republican presidential candidate’s supporters aren’t happy with this suggested change of tone.

Hillary Clinton finally campaigned with Barack Obama, at a rally in the town of Unity, N.H. Never one to miss out on using overtly direct town names—remember Bill Clinton was born in a place called Hope—the Democratic Party may be trying a bit too hard to heal its wounds after a divisive battle in the primaries.

Nicole and Jeff Rank, who were arrested in 2004 for refusing to remove or cover their anti-Bush T-shirts at a presidential rally, have just won an $80,000 settlement from the federal government. In prosecuting the case, the ACLU learned that the president’s advance manual has little tolerance for free speech, saying: “As a last resort security should remove the demonstrators from the event.”

In light of the LAPD’s recent storm trooper-like behavior, Bill Maher reminds police everywhere, “We want to support you—even to love you—but you have to remember, it says ‘To protect and serve’ on the side of the car, not ‘What the f—- are you looking at?’ ”
