Changes in Israeli policy have military rabbis joining combat troops at the tip of the spear. Ostensibly there to boost morale, critics worry that the rabbis are turning soldiers into Jewish jihadis. One rabbi says he was ordered to blow a ram’s horn like Joshua, because “It makes the war holier.”
Forty-four people were arrested Thursday— including three New Jersey mayors, two state legislators and several rabbis—in a federal investigation into public corruption and an international money-laundering scheme in which items ranging from human organs to fake designer bags were trafficked.
Some Israeli soldiers have accused military rabbis of pushing holy war in Gaza. “This rabbi comes to us and says the fight is between the children of light and the children of darkness,” said a reserve sergeant quoted by the L.A. Times.
A committee of Conservative Jewish legal experts will consider whether to lift a ban on gay rabbis and same-sex unions. The rabbi pictured here has written a proposal that he says would “enable gays and lesbians to have a love life sanctioned by Jewish law.”
