Many would consider being knighted or otherwise honored by England’s royals a dream come true. But more than 200 rebellious Brits have declined or returned the honor, refusing to hand their names and legacies over to rulers seeking to bolster their own dubious reputations. John Lennon and authors Roald Dahl and C.S. Lewis are on that list.

The queen has landed in Ireland, where she laid a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance to honor those who fought against British tyranny. And if you think that’s a nice gesture, you should see the emerald green outfit her majesty wore for her arrival.

If you’re not on Facebook, you’re officially more out of touch than the queen of England. Her Majesty, who already has a presence on YouTube, Twitter and Flickr, is starting up a monarchy funpage so you can more easily keep track of her business. Just remember, one does not poke the queen.

Of all the items we might have expected would rank high on outgoing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s wish list of things she’d like to do before leaving office, playing Brahms in a private concert for Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II wouldn’t have been one of them.

Robert Mugabe has been condemned by everyone from Nelson Mandela to the queen of England over his conduct in Zimbabwe’s runoff election, but he plans to go ahead with the contest even though the opposition has dropped out.

Queen Elizabeth began a toast on Tuesday by teasing the president: “I wondered whether I should start this toast saying I was here in 1776, but I don’t think I will.” Though she has since departed our shores, the British monarch is not done teaching Americans a lesson—her carbon footprint for the trip will be calculated and matched with a donation to an environmental charity.

Here the president’s Freudian slip is caught on tape in all its awkwardness. Also, it turns out Bush had to be prodded by Condoleezza Rice and wife Laura into making the state dinner a “white tie” affair. Apparently the idea that dinner with the queen should be a formal occasion escaped the man.
