Men Who Kick Down Doors

Picture this. A man bursts into a living room not his own. He confronts an enemy. He barks orders. He throws that enemy into a chair. The invader isn’t an American soldier leading a night raid on an Afghan village, nor is the enemy an anonymous Afghan householder. This warrior is just a guy in Ohio named Shane, and he’s doing what so many men find exhilarating: disciplining his girlfriend.

The Brain-Vagina Connection

In the course of writing her new book, “Vagina: A New Biography,” author and activist Naomi Wolf discovered research in neuroscience that strongly suggests that “the vagina is not just a sex organ at all, but a powerful mediator of female confidence, creativity and the sense of the connections between things.”

Egyptian Women Protesters Assaulted in Tahrir Square

In what looks to be an attempt to keep females out of Cairo’s political life, hundreds of men assaulted about 50 Egyptian women and their male supporters as they marched against sexual harassment in Tahrir Square on Friday.

Gender Inequality 101

Conservatives love to claim we live in a post-racial or post-gender world, but researchers in England are reminding us of the persistent examples of inequality that mark our society. A new study demonstrates that women are less likely than men to be offered enrollment at England’s prestigious Oxford University despite having the same grades as, or even better grades than, their male counterparts.

New Afghan Law Castrates Women’s Rights

Remember all that malarkey about how the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan would result in a remarkable push for women’s rights? Well, the Afghan government has passed a law that allows Shiite men to deny food to their wives if they refuse their husbands’ sexual demands. Oh, and a rapist can effectively avoid prosecution by paying “blood money” to his victim.

Abracadabra! Orthodoxy

An obvious Photoshop job in Israel has hilariously tried to make Israel’s inaugural Cabinet a bit more Orthodox. In one ultra-Orthodox Jewish newspaper, two female Cabinet members were cropped out of an official picture and replaced with two non-Cabinet men.

For Palin, It’s a (Christian) Man’s World

Sarah Palin may be a governor and a vice presidential candidate, but in the hyper-masculine world of the Christian right, she is subservient to a male hierarchy that claims to speak for God.

South Africa Prepares for World Cup, Prostitution

A plan to legalize sex work in time for South Africa’s 2010 World Cup has many in the country upset. While supporters believe criminalization puts women in harm’s way, religious groups and others argue that “family values” trump the interests of both the national economy and individual workers.

The Liberal Baby Bust

A population expert, writing in USA Today, highlights a little-known demographic trend: Progressives are much less likely to have children than conservatives. This “augers a far more conservative future,” he writes, “one in which patriarchy and other traditional values make a comeback, if only by default.”
