Gulf Oil Workers Evacuate Rigs Ahead of Storm

Oil-rig operators in the Gulf of Mexico announced Thursday that they would evacuate workers, and a flash-flood watch was issued for New Orleans ahead of a slow-moving storm system that could develop into a cyclone or even a hurricane. (more)

Deep-Water Drilling Ban Idles Workers

The Obama administration’s moratorium on deep-water drilling is affecting not only the oil companies but also the tens of thousands of workers who depend on the rigs for their livelihood and are now being laid off. To make matters worse, some of the rig owners are exploring moving their operations to other countries.
