With the campaign headed into the final weeks before the election, new polls pop up every day, and they continue to show a strong trend in favor of Barack Obama. Depending on the survey, Obama is ahead or tied in as many as 10 states won by George W. Bush in 2004, including faux-purple Florida and ruddy Indiana. Dennis Kucinich managed to fight off no fewer than four primary challengers to hold on to his party’s nomination and, in all likelihood, his seat in the House of Representatives. It appears that the Democrats of Ohio’s 10th District are happy with his service: He won by almost 20 points.

Exit polls, those surveys of voters as they leave their polling places, should be taken with a grain of salt. Having said that, CNN’s exit poll data from the so-called Potomac Primary shows Barack Obama crossing the demographic divide that has hampered him throughout the race. Seniors, white people, working-class voters and women—all traditional supporters of the Clinton campaign—came out for Obama in big numbers.

Clinton insiders talk a lot on the record about Hillary’s viability against John McCain, her confidence in Ohio and Texas and her determination to seat delegates from the uncontested Michigan and Florida primaries. But off the record, at least a few wonder if all that long-term thinking isn’t a bit premature for a campaign that is losing contests left and right.

A gunman went on a shooting rampage in a high school in downtown Cleveland on Wednesday. The gunman, who aimed shots at several people before killing himself, had apparently made threats at SuccessTech Academy last week. According to Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, three teenagers and two adults were injured.

Rep. Paul Gillmor, an Ohio Republican who had held his seat in the House for nearly 20 years, was found dead in his Washington apartment on Wednesday by members of his Capitol Hill staff. The cause of Gillmor’s death had not been officially announced by Wednesday afternoon. He was 68.

Jacqueline Maiden and Kathleen Dreamer were each sentenced to 18 months for rigging a ballot recount in Ohio after the 2004 election. The judge seemed to agree that there may have been a conspiracy to defraud the voters, saying, “I can’t help but feel there’s more to this story.” According to the Brad Blog, had John Kerry won just six more votes in each of the state’s precincts, he would be president.
