Barack Obama was busy drumming up support—and additional funding—in New Jersey on Friday, readying his response to the McCain campaign’s Palin-palooza at last week’s Republican National Convention and telling supporters he’s ready to scrap it out.

Does Lou Dobbs Have His Eye on New Jersey?

We don’t normally pay much attention to rumors here, but this one caught our eye. Apparently Republicans are buzzing that Lou Dobbs, the CNN anchor who styles himself a populist but comes off more like the unhinged distant relative who ruined Christmas, is thinking of running for governor of New Jersey.

New Jersey Considers Mandatory HIV Test

A new proposal would make New Jersey the first state to require HIV testing for pregnant women and their babies, unless the women decline the test in writing. New York Blames New Jersey for Stench

After a mysterious odor blanketed Manhattan this week, New Yorkers immediately turned to the usual suspect, blaming New Jersey for the sulfurous smell. The Garden State was not amused, particularly since there’s no hard evidence, as of yet, that the origin was in New Jersey.

New Jersey Gets Civil Unions

Both houses of New Jersey’s Legislature have approved the creation of civil unions, granting the protections of marriage to gay couples as required by a recent court ruling.  The governor has said he will sign the bill, making New Jersey the third state to adopt civil unions.

Gov. Corzine Orders New Jersey Government Shut Down

A first in the state’s history, the executive order halted road construction and lottery ticket sales, and put over half the state’s 80,000 employees on furlough. Gov. Jon S. Corzine ordered the shutdown after legislators missed a June 30 budget deadline due to disagreements over a measure to raise the sales tax to close a budget gap. Depending on a court ruling, the state’s 12 casinos may also have to shut their doors.
