Naomi Klein on Riots and Resistance

Britain’s riots were not political, we are assured, and looting is simply un-British, but “Shock Doctrine” author Naomi Klein takes a different view: From Iraq to Argentina, when corrupt elites pass the bill to the struggling masses, civil unrest is to be expected.

Naomi Klein on Climate Change, Union Busting

This is one instance in which we would hope that Naomi Klein wouldn’t get it right, but as the “Shock Doctrine” author explains in this “Democracy Now!” interview, certain current events (ahem, Gov. Scott Walker) point to a troubling trend taking hold in the U.S. ...

Naomi Klein to Danes: Ease Off the Controls in ‘Hopenhagen’

So, author-activist Naomi Klein has spent the last few days in Copenhagen, taking in the developments—and appreciating streamlined and functional Scandinavian design—at the climate summit, but she has a message for her Danish hosts: Cool it on the whole control freak thing, or the “Hopenhagen” conference isn’t going to be a success.

Israel Should Pay Attention to a Man of Justice

Israeli investigations of the Gaza war, its government officials announced, were “a thousand times” fairer than the Goldstone investigation—a preposterous claim, given Israel’s constant inability to conduct fair inquiries of its own—and that his mission “gave legitimacy to the Hamas terrorist organization.”

Artists and Activists Protest Tel Aviv Program at Toronto Film Fest

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has a way of popping up in any number of seemingly unrelated arenas across the world, such as the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, where a planned Tel Aviv-themed program has spurred several entertainers, including Jane Fonda, Danny Glover and David Byrne, as well as writers and filmmakers, to sign a letter of protest that’s shaking things up with just days to go before the fest begins. All of the 10 films in City to City, a new program at the festival, will focus on the Israeli city.

Naomi Klein: Palin = ‘Bush in Drag’

Here’s a sound bite for the ages: “The Shock Doctrine” author Naomi Klein was one of the panelists on the Sept. 19 episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher,” and when the conversation inevitably turned to Sarah Palin, Klein pronounced the GOP VP nominee to be “basically Bush in drag.”

Beijing 2008: Are You Ready for McCommunism?

Naomi Klein points out that while repression in China is nothing new, Police State 2.0 has nothing to do with Communist ideological purity and everything to do with creating “the ultimate consumer cocoon for Visa cards, Adidas sneakers, China Mobile cell phones, McDonald’s happy meals, Tsingtao beer, and UPS delivery—to name just a few of the official Olympic sponsors. But the hottest new market of all is the surveillance itself ... an entirely for-profit affair that is the latest frontier for the global Disaster Capitalism Complex.”

The Truthdig Interview With Naomi Klein

Critics and challengers of Naomi Klein’s work had better take a close look at her latest book, “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism,” before launching their attacks.
