High Court Lets Ashcroft, Mueller Off the Hook

The nation’s top court decided on Monday that former Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI honcho Robert Mueller aren’t directly accountable for the abuses that Pakistani detainee Javaid Iqbal, a Muslim, says he endured as a result of his race and religion in a New York prison in 2002.

FBI Chief’s Notes Tell of Ashcroft Hospital Scene

Corroborating an account by former Deputy Attorney General James B. Comey, FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III detailed the dramatic events that occurred in then-Attorney General John Ashcroft’s hospital room in March 2004 when his successor, Alberto Gonzales, attempted to persuade a convalescing Ashcroft to sign off on a domestic wiretapping program he opposed.

Liar Liar

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has once again been caught in a lie, or, to be charitable, an unfortunate incongruity. Testifying before Congress, FBI Director Robert Mueller twice contradicted Gonzales’ sworn testimony, lending credence to the testimony of former Deputy Attorney General James Comey, who also disagreed with Gonzales’ version of the facts.
