By Robert Scheer — How do you foreclose on a home when you can’t figure out who owns it because the original mortgage is part of a derivatives package that has been sliced and diced so many ways that its legal ownership is often unrecognizable?

Previously undisclosed documents have measured the economic impact of the U.S. federal moratorium on deep-water oil drilling at 23,000 jobs lost and billions of dollars in frozen investment. Casey Jr., the U.S. Army chief of staff, expressed reservations to senators on Tuesday about changing the law in wartime.

John McCain is showing his commitment to lessening America’s dependence on foreign oil by offering a $300 million prize to anyone who can conjure up a superior automobile battery, energy-wise, than the current standard. But at the same time, he’s supporting Bush’s push to lift the ban on drilling in U.S. coastal waters.

President Bush called for a speedy end to the ban on offshore oil drilling in American coastal waters Wednesday, chiding his congressional challengers by declaring that there’s “no excuse for delay” in lifting the “outdated and counterproductive” restrictions. However, some of his political opponents on this issue, like California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, are giving him heat from his own side of the political aisle.
