Thousands Flee Floods in Midwest

Several Midwestern states, including Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois, have been hit hard by floods this week as rivers rose far beyond their normal levels. In Cedar Rivers, Iowa, a whole hospital had been evacuated, thousands of residents had fled their homes and over 400 city blocks were under water by Friday.

It’s My Party and I’ll Convene if I Want to

Rep. Ron Paul really wants to speak at the Republican convention. He’s been getting the cold shoulder from the GOP, so now Paul is planning to hold his own convention in a nearby arena during the week that John McCain officially becomes the nominee.

Al Franken: From ‘SNL’ to U.S. Senate?

Al Franken’s career arc has taken an unconventional turn: The comedian has nailed down the Minnesota Democrats’ endorsement for the U.S. Senate, following in former Gov. Jesse Ventura’s footsteps as a performer-turned-politician in the Midwestern state. Starting out in comedy may serve Franken well in Congress, where knowing how to work a tough crowd just might come in handy.

The Thorn in McCain’s Side

Ron Paul has framed his campaign as a long-term fight for the soul of his party. To that end, Paul has continued to campaign against John McCain, even though he has no shot at the nomination, and his supporters are planning to publicly upstage the nominee at the Republican convention in September.

Sen. Craig: ‘I Am Not Gay’

The Idaho senator who was arrested on charges of committing a lewd act in a Minnesota airport apologizes for the scandal but emphatically denies that he is gay: “Let me be clear: I am not gay. I never have been gay.” For the record, if a movie is ever made of this fiasco, Craig simply has to be played by John Lithgow.

Minnesota Bridge Hero Says ‘Nope’ to Bush

Out of every big disaster story emerges the ever-reliable “media hero/heroine” subplot.  Thus, last week’s Minneapolis bridge tragedy brought news of one Jeremy Hernandez, 20, who helped 50 children to safety after their school bus started tipping.  According to The New York Times, this particular local hero will enjoy some of the perks of his position in the spotlight, but he’s opting out of a photo op with President Bush.

Back to Basics

In a world filled with problems—Iraq, terrorism and so on—we tend to ignore the boring ones. Which is why, sadly, bridges will collapse and levees will break.

Collapsed Bridge Had Known Structural Problems

A day after Wednesday’s deadly rush-hour bridge collapse in Minneapolis, the Bush administration acknowledged that the interstate freeway bridge had been known to be “structurally deficient” for at least two years—while carefully pointing out that the Minnesota government was responsible for its upkeep.

‘Daily Show’: Senator Al Franken?

Al Franken dropped in on Wednesday’s “Daily Show,” where Jon Stewart asked the comedian and radio host whether he would indeed run against Sen. Norm Coleman in the 2008 election.  Although Franken said he was still making up his mind, he added: “I’ve moved to Minnesota, I’ve been there since January 1st.  You don’t move to Minnesota January 1st unless you’re serious.”
