Dispatches From Cairo: All Children Go to Heaven

“Is this the work of a God-fearing people?” screamed our neighborhood imam over the loudspeakers during Friday’s passionate sermon. The innate hostility in regard to Israel tilts toward hatred.

In Gaza, Status Quo Won’t Do

The drama unfolding in Gaza seems numbingly familiar. This time, however, there’s a big and potentially tragic difference: Not even the actors—Palestinians and Israelis—can possibly know how it will turn out.

Nothing Great About the ‘Grand Bargain’

The president and Congress reaching a “grand bargain” would mean significant cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; some Republican senators believe Obama is using a Cold War-era mind-control technique on American citizens; meanwhile, millions showed up to the largest coordinated strike Europe has ever seen. These discoveries and more after the jump.

The Growing Global Movement Against Austerity

Amaia Engana didn’t wait to be evicted from her home. On Nov. 9, in the town of Barakaldo, a suburb of Bilbao in Spain’s Basque Country, officials from the local judiciary were on their way to serve her eviction papers. Amaia stood on a chair and threw herself out of her fifth-floor apartment window, dying instantly on impact on the sidewalk below.

Memo to the Military: Give a Damn About the Warming Planet

Global warming could be American imperialism’s undoing if Pentagon officials don’t prepare accordingly, a group of experts effectively reported in a study warning against such “climate surprises” as natural disasters, sea-level rise, drought and epidemics.

We the People, and the New American Civil War

The vitriol of the 2012 election is worse than the previous elections. Worse than the Palin-induced smarmy 2008. Worse than the swift-boat lies of 2004. Worse, even, than the anything-goes craziness of 2000 and its ensuing bitterness.

Drone Warfare: An Illegal Tactic Sure to Perpetuate U.S.-Muslim War Indefinitely

It is a profound but nearly universal mistake among Americans (and others) to think that the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan in 2013 or 2014 will end the American war with the Muslim world that began on September 11 in 2001.

Blacks More Likely Than Other Groups to Identify as Gay

Final Debate Offers Unclear Choice of Troubling Policies

The United States is intellectually adrift upon an exceptionally turbulent sea running in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf, and on the larger scene, Washington is blundering into serious trouble with Russia and probably with a China that is on the edge of both foreign and domestic crises.

It seems that the first rule of the presidential debate club now is: no disagreeing on what matters most. Here are five critical questions that should be explored (even if all of us know that they won’t be) in the foreign policy-inclusive presidential debates scheduled for October 16th, and 22nd.

Overwrought Empire

The U.S. is now the sole planetary Top Gun in a way that empire-builders once undoubtedly fantasized about: alone and essentially uncontested. By all the usual measuring sticks, it should be supreme in a historically unprecedented way. And yet it couldn’t be more obvious that it’s not.
