Lady Gaga vs. Malaysia

Apparently the heavy-handed radio stations of Malaysia are not too keen on the pro-gay message of Lady Gaga’s newest ubiquitous single and have taken to editing out parts of “Born This Way.” The monster-in-chief told her Malaysian fans to “do everything that you can if you want to be liberated by your society, you must call, you must not stop, you must protest peacefully.”

Although the oppression of women in some foreign countries is routine, we ought not to forget cases like the recent ones in Malaysia in which three women were caned for having extramarital intercourse and another awaits a caning decision for, *gasp*, drinking beer.

After a bidding war among 44 oil companies, Shell of the United Kingdom and Petronas of Malaysia have jointly won the right to 10 oil fields in Iraq, in the second such auction since the 2003 invasion.

Malaysian Groups Rankled by Jesus Cartoon

The Malaysian newspaper Makkal Osai is apologizing for running a cartoon image of Jesus Christ enjoying a beer and a cigarette on its front page, claiming it was a mistake made by an editor who had downloaded the image from the Web.  However, Makkal Osai’s efforts to quell the controversy may not be sufficient for some religious groups, judging by last year’s flap over the infamous Muhammad cartoons.
