By Molly Ivins — “The administration has put itself in the position of the Boy Who Cried Wolf. If, God forbid, a serious terrorist conspiracy is uncovered, there will be a tendency to dismiss it in a backlash to these over-hyped ‘plots.’ ”

That’s the undertone of Washington Post columnist Dan Froomkin’s article about the widespread criticism of Dick Cheney’s suggestion that those who voted for Ned Lamont are aiding and abetting terrorists. Froomkin: “Cheney ... may have crossed the line that separates legitimate political discourse from hysteria.”

After Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman both said that Ned Lamont’s Senate primary victory counted as a win for the terrorists, Lamont told the AP, “It surprised me ... it seemed almost orchestrated.”
We were going to headline this “A Vast Right- and Left-Wing Conspiracy,” but couldn’t—now that Lieberman has given the middle finger to the left.

The hard-charging senator from Wisconsin swatted down Sen. Joe Lieberman’s claim that pulling out of Iraq would only embolden future would-be plane-bombing terrorists: ?Joe is showing with that regrettable statement that he doesn?t get it. He doesn?t get it.”

Sen. Joe Lieberman seized upon news of the foiled British plane bombers to say that a victory for his Democratic rival, Ned Lamont, in November would constitute a victory for the terrorists.
You know, when John at AMERICAblog asked who was going to be the first one to exploit this situation for political gain, he thought it would at least be a Republican….

The “Daily Show” opened Wednesday with coverage of Ned Lamonts victory over the man Jon Stewart referred to as Joe Loserman. After playing a clip of Liebermans concession speech where the senator said the game was only half over, and the Lamont team was just ahead, Stewart shot back, Perhaps I could, uh, offer my own, uh, sports comparison, if you will. There was a game, and you lost.

The ABC News host reports: “According to a close Lieberman adviser, the President’s political guru, Karl Rove, has reached out to the Lieberman camp with a message straight from the Oval Office: ‘The boss wants to help. Whatever we can do, we will do.’ ”

Also, top Senate Dems Schumer, Reid and Dodd throw their support to Lamont (but stop short of calling on Lieberman to drop his independent bid).

Riding a fierce antiwar message, Ned Lamont came out of nowhere to defeat a three-term senator, capturing 52% of the vote to Lieberman’s 48%.

Aides to Sen. Joe Lieberman accused Ned Lamont’s campaign Tuesday morning—with no evidence—of attacking and bringing down Lieberman’s website. But Markos (of Daily Kos) seems to have found the real culprit: Lieberman’s $15-a-month web hosting company went down, along with all its clients. (Thanks to reader “publius” for the link.)

What an oddly petty conclusion to a race that has hinged on the most consequential of all topics.

With mere hours to go before the Connecticut primary vote, Sen. Joe Lieberman said a victory for challenger Ned Lamont would send a message to the country: ?In the Democratic Party, there?s no room for strong-on-security Dems.?
Actually, a victory for Lamont would send a message that there’s no room in the party for Dems who coddle President Bush as he exploits the so-called war on terror to launch imperialist misadventures.

Down in the polls against challenger Ned Lamont, and with under 24 hours to go before the U.S. Senate primary in Connecticut, Sen. Joe Lieberman tried to distance himself from Bush. You’ll love how he tried to spin his infamous career-killing line, “In matters of war, we undermine presidential credibility at our nation’s peril.”

This quote, made in the context of the Lamont-Lieberman Connecticut Senate race, tells you everything you need to know about the degree to which special interests have their hooks into Lieberman.
The good news, however, is that the polls show that the public is recognizing the truth about Lieberman.

Connecticut Senate challenger Ned Lamont told Stephen Colbert that he became a Democrat to fight Richard Nixon at age 18, and he’s still fighting a Democratic battle against Nixon’s heir in the White House today. Well, we knew this was coming, but now it’s official: Sen. Joe Lieberman has created a new political party that he will use to appear on the November ballot if he loses the Democratic primary in August.
As such a move would amount to sticking his thumb in the eye of Conn. voters, the name of his new political party is deliciously ironic: Connecticut for Lieberman.
Maybe he should have picked something more representative of his backing: Lieberman for Lieberman.

Want to see everything you need to know about how hopelessly out of touch Sen. Joe Lieberman is with the next generation of voters? Check out his campaign website, then check out the site of challenger Ned Lamont:
Immediately after the candidates’ Thursday night debate, Lamont’s site was jam-packed with video highlights, media reactions, blogger coverage and fact-checked responses to Lieberman’s charges. Lieberman’s site, however, barely even mentions the debates; there’s nary a blog; and his “news” page hasn’t been updated since Monday. (Update: 12 hours after the debate, the campaign posted a few paragraphs—but that’s it.) It’s such a tone-deaf approach you have to wonder who’s minding the shop over there.
