The demise of Manuel “Sureshot” Marulanda has been rumored many times before, but this time the Colombian army has announced that the long-time leader of the rebel group FARC is dead and has challenged FARC to disprove the report. Sources close to Marulanda have yet to confirm the news.

UK’s Blair to Resign in 2007, Says Paper

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has told aides that he will step down as the leader of his party on May 31, 2007, and resign as prime minister on July 26, according to the British tabloid The Sun. He had already announced he would not seek a fourth term in office, but this is the first news of a specific resignation date.

Successor to Zarqawi Is Announced

Al Qaeda in Iraq said in a Web statement that a militant named Abu Hamza al Muhajer had been chosen as the group’s new leader. Nothing is immediately known about Muhajer, except that his last name is Arabic for immigrant, implying that he is not Iraqi.

No get-out-of-jail-free card for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.  A Texas court upheld a felony indictment for DeLay on charges of money laundering in connection with a 2002 Texas election. A separate indictment for criminal conspiracy was dismissed.
