On Sunday morning, a suicide car bomber disguised as a policeman attacked the police headquarters in the Iraqi city of Kirkuk, killing 36 people and wounding 105 in the blast, according to The New York Times.

A car bomb killed at least 20 people and wounded 40 in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Tuesday. The bombing comes on the heels of national celebrations marking U.S. troops’ pullback from Iraq’s cities and towns, and just a week after another suicide attack left 80 people dead in Taza Khurmatu, just south of Kirkuk.

Multiple suicide bombings in Baghdad and Kirkuk in the north killed more than 50 Iraqis on Monday. The bombers in the capital targeted Shiite pilgrims. More than 200 were wounded in the two cities. News of the attacks came on the heels of a spate of bombings around the world.

Iraqi officials are attributing the deaths of 29 people in Duwailiya, in Diyala province north of Baghdad, to al-Qaida militants who disguised themselves in military uniforms and surrounded the village before opening fire Tuesday on men, women and children. This latest report follows other news of widespread violence as the U.S. troop “surge” continues.

Multiple bombs exploded across the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq Monday. The BBC reported that at least 85 people were killed and more than 180 wounded. The deadliest of the bombs was detonated near the offices of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, a party led by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, leaving a 30-foot crater.

The Bush administration finds itself in a difficult position as tensions between two regional allies threaten to escalate to war. The Turkish military is fed up with Kurdish rebels it says have safe harbor in northern Iraq, and now wants to mount an assault across the border. One of Iraq’s Kurdish leaders has said such an attack would trigger retaliation.
