It looks like the ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is officially dead. The procedure to seal the well—or in oil industry terms, to “kill” it—has been pronounced a success, providing an unceremonious end to the spilling of millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf.

BP Readies the Final ‘Kill’

Someone should tell BP that the whole kill-speak approach does not bode well when you’re actually killing wildlife and industry in the Gulf. But nonetheless, BP says the mud and cement pumped into the blown-out oil well, termed a “static kill,” are holding and that it is preparing to seal the deal with a “bottom kill” later this month.

David Letterman takes Bill O’Reilly to task over the Iraq war and more: “You’re putting words in my mouth, just the way you put artificial facts in your head.”  When the mega pundit said the U.S. should remain in Iraq though mistakes had been made, Letterman shot back: “So that means we’ve made a mistake in war so we stay there and kill as many Americans as we possibly can.  Yeah, that’s the way you get out of a mistake.”

Julia Wilson, a 14-year-old honor student, was removed from her class and interrogated by Secret Service agents for writing “kill Bush” on her MySpace page.  The teen said the agents’ “unnecessarily mean” questioning brought her to tears, but ultimately encouraged her activism against the Iraq war.

Deadliest Day for Israel in Lebanon

More than 100 Hezbollah fighters staged a fierce ambush on Israeli ground forces entering a Lebanese border town, killing at least eight Israeli soldiers. Meanwhile, 24 Palestinians were killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip.
