Iran Frees 2 American Hikers

Two years after crossing an unmarked border into Iran, American hikers Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal are being released from prison on $1 million bail. Convicted of espionage by the Iranians, they had been sentenced to eight years behind bars. Update: The two Americans flew Wednesday to Oman, where they raced down the stairway of a private jet and into the arms of their families.  (more)

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hints at Prisoner Swap for 2 Hikers

After speculation that Iran might allow two imprisoned American hikers to return home in exchange for a steep bail, Iran’s foreign minister hinted Saturday that the timetable for their release could depend on the willingness of the U.S. to release Iranian prisoners. (more)

Update: The Iranian Justice Ministry has contradicted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and said the release of the two hikers who were sentenced to eight years in prison could be delayed.

Iran Trial Begins for Hikers

Trial has begun in Tehran for two of three American hikers accused of espionage after blundering across the border into Iran. The third hiker, Sarah Shourd, was freed on bail last September and is back in the United States.
