Israelis have begun celebrating their nation’s diamond anniversary with fireworks and public cheer. The Jewish state was founded shortly after World War II and has known almost constant conflict as well as remarkable growth in the decades since. Many Palestinians, who refer to the country’s founding as “the Catastrophe,” are preparing to mark the occasion with something less than delight.

Holocaust survivors took to the streets of Jerusalem on Sunday to protest the Israeli government’s offer of a $20 monthly stipend. A survivor group director explained the situation this way: “They have cancer 14 times more than the regular population. They break their bones due to the malnutrition they had years ago. And now when they need the help, there is nobody to turn to.”

A new poll shows that 70 percent of Israelis favor peace with the Palestinians along the lines of a two-state solution, but only 39 percent think peace will be achieved in the near future. Meanwhile, a majority of Israelis favor strengthening ties with Mahmoud Abbas’ (above left) Fatah regime in the West Bank.

During construction of a gas pipeline in southern Ukraine, workers found a mass grave containing the remains of thousands of Jews near an old concentration camp. A similar site was found last year, containing 3,500 victims. Representatives from the Jewish community say there are between 250 and 700 such graves in Ukraine, which explains why many have eluded discovery for so long.
