Israelis have begun celebrating their nation’s diamond anniversary with fireworks and public cheer. The Jewish state was founded shortly after World War II and has known almost constant conflict as well as remarkable growth in the decades since. Many Palestinians, who refer to the country’s founding as “the Catastrophe,” are preparing to mark the occasion with something less than delight.

There’s a new Jewish lobby in town, one that hopes to reclaim American Jews’ proud progressive tradition and counter the right-wingers who have managed to intimidate Washington in the name of the Jewish community. Unlike like-minded advocacy groups, J Street hopes to raise gobs of money in order to support lawmakers who take a more enlightened view, including a call for a more peaceful approach to American and Israeli foreign policy.

Was World War II necessary? In an exercise in literary hygiene, a distinguished historian casts a skeptical eye at an acclaimed novelist’s revisionist take on the “Good War.”

By Joe Conason — Whatever their true private beliefs, presidential candidates in America are constantly required to provide proofs of faith, often through their connections with various religious figures. Benedictions from the pulpit bestow an aura of righteousness—except, of course, when the pastor or minister is a disreputable kook whose endorsement should be an embarrassment.

By Bill Boyarsky — The bad side of being a new face in politics is that your enemies can treat you like a blank slate, to be filled in with lies and slurs. That’s what is happening to Sen. Barack Obama, who is being subjected to a secretive whispering and e-mail campaign that aims to alienate him from Jewish voters by linking him to Black Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan and the Muslim religion.

By Timothy Snyder — One of the great crimes of the 20th century—the mass murder of Jews in the Nazi-occupied Soviet territories—is all but forgotten. “The Unknown Black Book” helps us remember.

Warner Bros. might take issue with this character, Assud the rabbit, who recently debuted on the Palestinian kid-targeted program “Pioneers of Tomorrow” and bears more than a passing resemblance to WB’s Bugs Bunny. The similarities stop there, as Assud says he will “get rid of the Jews” and will “eat them up.”

By Barry Lando — The former “60 Minutes” producer laments the unfortunate tendency to treat any criticism of Israel as an attack on the Jewish people and a denial of their past suffering.

Holocaust survivors took to the streets of Jerusalem on Sunday to protest the Israeli government’s offer of a $20 monthly stipend. A survivor group director explained the situation this way: “They have cancer 14 times more than the regular population. They break their bones due to the malnutrition they had years ago. And now when they need the help, there is nobody to turn to.”

A new poll shows that 70 percent of Israelis favor peace with the Palestinians along the lines of a two-state solution, but only 39 percent think peace will be achieved in the near future. Meanwhile, a majority of Israelis favor strengthening ties with Mahmoud Abbas’ (above left) Fatah regime in the West Bank.

During construction of a gas pipeline in southern Ukraine, workers found a mass grave containing the remains of thousands of Jews near an old concentration camp. A similar site was found last year, containing 3,500 victims. Representatives from the Jewish community say there are between 250 and 700 such graves in Ukraine, which explains why many have eluded discovery for so long.

John Oliver delivers this hysterical report on the nation of Israel. At one point the “Daily Show” reporter gives the Israeli ambassador a chance to clear the air: “There is a nasty conspiracy theory going around that your country is run by Jews—a cabal of Jews who set the domestic agenda and run the media. Would you like to put that to rest now?”

During a recent radio show, Rush Limbaugh chortled over a newspaper headline that playfully asked whether John Edwards would be “the first woman president.” Limbaugh asked who would design the candidate’s inaugural dress, played “I Am Woman” as Edwards’ theme song and repeatedly called out to fellow bigot Ann Coulter, as if soliciting a pat on the back.

According to rawstory.com, a forthcoming book alleges that Bush, while still governor, made anti-Semitic remarks to a reporter: ?You know what I’m gonna tell those Jews when I get to Israel, don’t you, Herman? I’m telling ‘em they’re all going to hell.” (h/t: Americablog)

Mel Gibson?s recent bout of anti-Semitism might rightly be described as indefensible, yet somehow some conservative commentators have decided to defend the actor?s bigoted outburst. One conservative cast Gibson as the victim of ?the vile and anti-human Political Correctness cult,? while David Horowitz blamed a ?hatred of Christians? for America?s interest in the story.
