The prolonged Republican primary campaign appears to be taking a toll on independent voters’ faith in Mitt Romney. According to the latest Pew poll, only a minority of independents now describe Romney as “honest and trustworthy” and slightly more than half of independent voters now favor Barack Obama in a race against Romney, who led the president in that category only a month ago. In the aftermath of her convention speech, it seems clear that Sarah Palin is an effective mascot for the base of her party. She excited the Xcel Center, but failed to impress independents, who didn’t like her sarcasm and still aren’t sure she’s qualified. John McCain will have to do the heavy lifting there, notes the Political Insider, if he has any hope of winning the election.

While he continues to get tremendous support from Republicans (go figure), Joe Lieberman is on the outs with Democrats and independents in his home district, according to a new poll. Were an election held today, 74 percent of Democrats would vote for Ned Lamont, while the same percentage of Republicans would vote for Lieberman over their own candidate.

Documents obtained by The Politico suggest that Barack Obama has moderated his positions on several issues since his early political life, a charge the candidate denies. He has also tried to distance himself from the label of “most liberal senator.” Perhaps the former community organizer doth protest too much?

According to Gallup, Democrats and Democratic-leaning Independents make up 49% of the population, Republicans 42%. Last year, the parties were dead even at 46%.
