Two weeks after the death of Joerg Haider, former leader of the far-right Austrian Freedom Party, media attention has moved from Haider’s fascistic political life to his personal life, with the politician’s sexual identity undergoing a bit of a queering, much to the surprise of his ultranationalistic supporters. Haider was a 58-year-old married father of two.

Congress is investigating the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for the first time in the rule’s 15-year life. Critics of the famously troubled compromise would like to take advantage of a troop-starved military to scrap the policy, but the opposition argues that openly gay soldiers would frighten away new recruits.

What is Ann Coulter’s beef with John Edwards? The human scandal factory who once referred to the candidate as a “faggot” has re-emerged from hate radio silence to suggest that she should have said she hoped Edwards would be killed by terrorists. We already know nothing she says should be taken seriously, so why is “Good Morning America” giving her a soapbox?

Outgoing Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Peter Pace says he did not resign voluntarily, but “I’ve been told I’m done.” Defense Secretary Robert Gates openly admitted that he would not seek another term for Pace in order to avoid a difficult confirmation. Pace has been closely tied to the Iraq war and its fortunes from the start, and only made matters worse recently with a public declaration of homophobia.

Gen. Peter Pace took his boot out of his mouth long enough to refuse to apologize for, and instead to reiterate, his anti-gay statements in today’s Chicago Tribune. While Pace allowed that he should have just signaled his support for the government’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy instead of focusing on his “personal moral views,” he didn’t retract his claim that homosexuality is “immoral.”

During a recent radio show, Rush Limbaugh chortled over a newspaper headline that playfully asked whether John Edwards would be “the first woman president.” Limbaugh asked who would design the candidate’s inaugural dress, played “I Am Woman” as Edwards’ theme song and repeatedly called out to fellow bigot Ann Coulter, as if soliciting a pat on the back.

A number of newspapers around the country have dropped Ann Coulter’s syndicated column following her now-notorious homophobic zinger at a conference of conservatives last week. In addition to the three papers Editor & Publisher tallied Thursday, Media Matters on Friday named two more dailies that have had it with Coulter’s antics.

Ann Coulter tried out some reliably juvenile new material at Friday’s Conservative Political Action Conference. “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards,” she cracked, “but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot, so I ... can’t really talk about Edwards.”

Republicans across the country have seized the threat of gay marriage in a desperate attempt to hold on to Congress. Now that the “security” issue no longer offers the boost it once did, the GOP is counting on homophobia to drive voter turnout.
