Giving Israel a Pass

The former “60 Minutes” producer laments the unfortunate tendency to treat any criticism of Israel as an attack on the Jewish people and a denial of their past suffering.

Ahmadenijad on Iranian Gays, Jews, Nuclear Program

Addressing harsh criticism from Columbia University President Lee Bollinger, as well as allegations about the treatment of homosexuals in Iran, the status of the Iranian Jewish population, his take on Israel and his country’s nuclear program, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadenijad raised as many questions as he answered during his controversial appearance at Columbia University on Monday.

Ahmadenijad’s N.Y. Visit Triggers Protests, Upsets

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadenijad was branded a “madman” on the front page of the New York Daily News on Monday, the day he was set to speak at Columbia University amid widespread protests and not so subtle references to Adolf Hitler, whom Columbia’s Public Affairs Acting Dean John Coatsworth said would also have been allowed to speak on campus, at least in his pre-Holocaust era.

Auschwitz From Another Angle

A newly released series of photos taken at Auschwitz and sent last year to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum shows Nazi officers and female SS members in a bafflingly banal (cf. Hannah Arendt) array of activities:  singing, relaxing, laughing on group getaways, and even lighting Christmas trees.

Tear Down That Wall

I sat down with former President Jimmy Carter last week at the Carter Center in Atlanta. The Center was hosting a conference of human rights defenders, people at the front lines confronting repressive regimes around the globe. After a quarter-century of humanitarian work through the Carter Center, monitoring elections, working to eradicate neglected tropical diseases and focusing on the poor, Jimmy Carter now finds himself at the center of the storm in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Holocaust Survivors Protest in Jerusalem

Holocaust survivors took to the streets of Jerusalem on Sunday to protest the Israeli government’s offer of a $20 monthly stipend. A survivor group director explained the situation this way: “They have cancer 14 times more than the regular population. They break their bones due to the malnutrition they had years ago. And now when they need the help, there is nobody to turn to.”

Mass Grave Discovered in Ukraine

During construction of a gas pipeline in southern Ukraine, workers found a mass grave containing the remains of thousands of Jews near an old concentration camp. A similar site was found last year, containing 3,500 victims. Representatives from the Jewish community say there are between 250 and 700 such graves in Ukraine, which explains why many have eluded discovery for so long.

Anne Frank comparison

Memo to Pundits and Pols: No More Holocaust Comparisons

That’s the advice of a Washington Post reporter, who says that no one should ever compare anything to the Nazis, Hitler or the Holocaust. Even if you’re talking, as Sen. Dick Durbin recently was, about the prisoner mistreatment scandal at Gitmo, it will always backfire. Other examples:

  • FreeRepublic.com and Accuracy in Media pull the “Anne Frank card” on the N.Y. Times.
  • CNN Host Glenn Beck uses a Holocaust comparison for the N.Y. Times, too.

    In Defense of Free Thought

On Monday an Austrian court sentenced crackpot British historian David Irving to three years’ imprisonment for having denied the Holocaust 17 years ago.  Directly on the heels of rioting sparked by the Muhammad cartoons, the ruling has exposed a longstanding double standard in the West about who is entitled to free speech and why.
