Did Mitt Romney, the likely Republican presidential nominee, just have his “John Kerry moment” of the 2012 campaign?

It’s hard to believe that the tea party movement is less than 2 years old. Just think of the cast of colorful characters we’ve gotten to know in such a short time—from old favorites repurposed for the job like Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann to newcomers like Christine O’Donnell. Stephen Colbert relives the magic in this special “Colbert Report” mash-up.

Several of Bill O’Reilly’s colleagues at Fox News clearly don’t subscribe to his patented “No Spin Zone” formula, as the spinnage happening on the Murdochian channel about the Islamic cultural center near Manhattan’s Ground Zero is enough to power a generously proportioned dynamo.

The folks at Fox News are outraged after seeing a clip of some New Jersey school kids singing President Obama’s praises and have handily spun the story into yet another sign of the Obama administration’s relentless indoctrination of unsuspecting Americans everywhere. Problem is, there’s similar footage to be found of schoolchildren doing the same for George W. Bush.

So, everyone has a relative, or perhaps a neighbor, who has spread warnings in hushed tones about Barack Obama’s years of secret indoctrination at a Muslim madrassa (gasp!) in Indonesia—as though affiliating with a Muslim community of any description is cause for concern—a rumor that has been disproved many times. Here’s a fun look into the origin of the chain e-mail that started that particular smear.

Some flip-flops are more welcome than others. During Sarah Palin’s interview with Sean Hannity, which “The Daily Show” likened to an infomercial, the VP candidate said war with Russia would be “off the table.” That’s a different tune than the one she hummed for ABC’s Charlie Gibson.

Shock jock Michael Savage clearly has an overblown sense of the extent of his “expertise” on a wide range of topics, but he overstepped his bounds by attempting armchair psychology about a sensitive subject last week—autism—and drew fire from angry parents and supporters.

According to his Web site, he’s “America’s Truth Detector; the Doctor of Democracy; the Most Dangerous Man in America; the All-Knowing, All-Sensing, All-Everything Maha Rushie; defender of motherhood, protector of fatherhood and an all-around good guy.” Whatever he may be, Rush Limbaugh is also going to be even richer than ever with his new contract to keep talking for the next eight years.

Filming one of his last scenes as Harvey Milk, San Francisco’s first openly gay politician, who was assassinated by City Hall colleague Dan White in 1978, Sean Penn got all Method on the crowd of extras assembled to reenact the scene of an important speech Milk made on Gay Freedom Day 30 years ago.

OK, so clearly Ann Coulter is not above leaning heavily on hyperbole to raise a few eyebrows and sell a few books, but this time she even managed to shock us a little with her announcement on Fox’s “Hannity & Colmes” that she’d go to bat for Hillary Clinton if she’s up against John McCain for the presidency, because, Coulter said, Clinton’s “more conservative” than McCain.

In case you think conservative Christians are just bluffing with their threats to split from the Republicans, take a gander at this clip of Sean Hannity begging James Dobson to support Rudy Giuliani. Dobson refuses, standing on principle and the promise of a more frenzied and loyal base under a Clinton presidency.

Perhaps more remarkable than watching Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee trot out the “if you break it, you buy it” analogy in relation to the Iraq war during Wednesday’s debate is taking in Ron Paul’s exasperated speech about how a handful of neocons in Washington “hijacked our foreign policy.”

Clinton strategist turned Fox News provocateur Dick Morris brought his peculiar insight to bear on the Hillary Clinton/Barack Obama showdown, claiming: “Obama is in fact a better first than she is. First black is better than first woman in our politics in terms of valuing it.” What reasoning Morris used to make that determination remains a mystery, as he quickly moved on to the multitude of reasons why he feels Obama can’t win, and how he’ll leave the country if either one does.

Vernon Robinson, the congressional candidate in North Carolina responsible for this disgraceful ad, self-destructs under the questioning of Alan Colmes. Watch it.

While out pimping his book, Pat Buchanan made an appearance on Fox News on Wednesday, where he exposed himself with a statement as racist as it was whiny: Id like the country I grew up in. It was a good country. I lived in Washington, D.C., 400,000 black folks, 400,000 white folks, in a country 89 or 90 percent white. I like that country. (Video & Transcript)

When conservative hate mistress Ann Coulter told two Democratic strategists on Fox News that Afghanistan was “going swimmingly,” they went to town on her, and Coulter cut her interview short. Watch it.

Check out this video a blogger (and AlterNet) made of being tossed out of Sean Hannity’s “Freedom Concert” simply for being liberal.

“The Daily Show” host pointed out the hypocrisy in Sean Hannity’s double standard on the ethics of leaking classified information, and slammed Robert Novak for making light of destroying CIA agent Valerie Plame’s career.

The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown, Pa., reports that the Fox News talk show host will appear at a fundraising breakfast with the Pennsylvania senator. Should we be surprised?

We stood up and cheered when we saw this one: Sean Hannity needles Arianna Huffington about something Alec Baldwin said, and Arianna throws it back in his face by listing some of the indefensible and “toxic” things Ann Coulter has said over the years. Good one, Arianna.
