Done With Guns, NRA Has Other Targets

The Supreme Court has pretty much decided the National Rifle Association’s main issue, but the pressure group, which has managed to make a plaything of Congress, shows no signs of disarming or disbanding. Instead, the gun lobby has set its sights on health care, Elena Kagan and other matters of state.

American Guns Stopped at the Border

Much has been made about Mexico’s deadly drug war and the potential for violence to spill across the border, but it is less often reported that American guns make that war go. Over the weekend, police in Laredo, Texas, seized 147 AK-47 rifles and 10,000 rounds of ammunition en route to Mexico.

Business Is Booming

Even with a faltering economy and a slump in global arms sales overall, that industry is booming for the U.S., which increased its annual market share to more than two-thirds of all foreign arms deals in 2008. That means that 68.4 percent of armaments trades involve U.S. sales.

Drugs, Guns and Reality

It’s an indictment of our fact-averse political culture that a statement of the blindingly obvious could sound so revolutionary. Nevertheless, Hillary Clinton deserves high praise for acknowledging that the U.S. bears “shared responsibility” for the drug-fueled violence sweeping Mexico.

Mexican Drug Lords Depend on Gun-Crazy America

More than 6,000 people died in Mexico’s drug war last year, far too many as a result of U.S.-purchased firepower. Though Mexico has strict gun laws, smugglers have no trouble legally purchasing military-grade weapons, such as AK-47 rifles, in the U.S., and then shipping them south of the border, where they are used with devastating effect.
