California Attorney General Bill Lockyer went after the six biggest U.S. and Japanese automakers on Wednesday, filing a lawsuit that cites greenhouse gas emissions as a public nuisance. Lockyer blamed the carmakers for millions of dollars worth of damage, and said he was out to get the taxpayers’ money back.

California will become the first state to cap greenhouse gas emissions, should a deal reached between Gov. Schwarzenegger and state Democrats pass the Legislature. The deal is seen as a betrayal by Republicans, who oppose a state cap on emissions.
