On Atheists and Easter

Easter is as good a time as any to delve into the issues raised by faith and reason. In this essay, E.J. Dionne challenges the arguments of “neo-atheism.” For an alternative point of view, read “An Atheist Manifesto” by Sam Harris.

Politician Breaks the God Barrier

Rep. Pete Stark of Fremont, Calif., just became the first Congress member and the highest-ranking elected official to publicly acknowledge he does not believe in God. To give you some sense of how difficult a time nonreligious politicians typically have in the U.S., a recent Gallup poll showed that while 92 percent of Americans would support a Jewish presidential candidate, only 45 percent would vote for an atheist.

God to Robertson: ‘Say Something Crazy’

Pat Robertson is at it again, this time claiming God told him that a major terrorist attack in 2007—possibly nuclear—would result in “mass killing.” The preacher on Tuesday demanded partial credit for predicting a possible tsunami last year, citing spring rains that drenched New England, so don’t rush to judge this latest communique.

Harris Campaign Scrambles to Explain Gaff

The Katherine Harris campaign tried on Saturday to clarify the candidate’s latest ride on the crazy train, when she said that separation of church and state is “a lie we have been told” and that “God is the one who chooses our rulers.”  It’s an interesting idea coming from Harris, who worked so hard in the 2000 election to disenfranchise voters on Bush’s behalf.  (h/t: Americablog)

Bush Praying

Bush Explains God’s Role in His Foreign Policy

During a speech in Irvine, Calif., Bush gave even more credence to the thesis of Kevin Phillips’ book “American Theocracy.”
Or, to paraphrase Truthdig contributor Sam Harris: Every time Bush says the word “God,” just substitute the word “Apollo” or “Thor,” and you begin to glimpse the intellectual quackery implicit in basing earthly policy on a supernatural conceit.

Hold the Religious Accountable for Their Beliefs

A prominent Slovenian-born atheist, surveying the violence done in the name of Islam, argues in the N.Y. Times that we should submit Islam, along with all other religions, to a “respectful, but for that reason no less ruthless, critical analysis. This, and only this, is the way to show a true respect for Muslims: to treat them as serious adults responsible for their beliefs.”

Support for the such beliefs declines steadily with education: Among those with high school diplomas, 58% are Bible backers; among those with postgraduate degrees, only 25%.
